The residence for our yoga retreat is an enchanting castle from the late IX century. The same period of the emergence of the great Tantra yoga tradition.

Il Castello di Valenzano is located in the slopes of Alpe di Catenaia. It is a sentinel of the underlying valley characterized by the winding River Arno. It is a place where you feel and sense the spirit of ancient centuries and sacred spaces. A spiritual calm emanates from the grounds, infused with the great spirit of Saint Francis of Asissi. The Castle Valenzano is in the Heart of Tuscany, Italy

The Valenzano Castle is located just 30 minutes from Arezzo and an hour’s drive from Florence, Siena, Cortona, Perugia and Chianti, and is on the outskirts of the Casentino Forest Park in a beautiful valley full of castles, monasteries and Romanesque churches, at an altitude of about 500 m above sea level.

A perfect place to enjoy the legendary Tuscan food!

A joyful experience and inspiring practice in an amazing setting

We will travel through the undulating Tuscan hills, bright green valleys, up surging cypresses, lush terraces of olive trees and serene country villages.

We’ll pass hilltop castles, stone farm houses with tile roofs and men working the fields as their families have done for centuries before them. Along the way we will breathe the soft spring air rich with layers of fragrances and perhaps sample Italian gelato or sip a cappuccino at a local café.

Also, the day trips in our yoga retreat will offer opportunities to experience not only the cherished treasures of the region, but the spectacular scenery along the way. Included are exploring the Sanctuary of La Verna and Hermitage of Camaldoli.

Sanctuary of La Verna on Mount Penna is a sacred pilgrimage destination with numerous trails to explore.

It became the favorite site for St. Francis of Assisi and his followers for spending long periods of meditation and prayer.

St. Francis’ last stay at La Verna was in 1924, when he was already tired and ill. During this time, while absorbed in prayer, he had a vision and received the stigmata that he carried until his death two years later.

Hikers can follow various beautiful paths through numerous valley trails, or up in the mountains in the sacred forests of the Hermitage of Camaldoli.

St. Romuald founded the monastery in this splendid setting in 1012. The monks still live here today. At the Antica Farmacia (old pharmacy). You can purchase herbal teas and infusions, liqueurs and honey products made by the monks from century-old recipes as part of their daily routine, study and prayers.

This peaceful place is a favorite of Annettes’ to hike and visit. Tuscany is a state of grace.

Once you step off your yoga mat and you can explore the charming villages close to our yoga retreat location. Nearby ancient Poppi (the historical capital of the ancient region of Tuscany), Bibbiena, and Arezzo. Bibbiena has many small ‘mom and pop’ shops and also a modern shopping center. Here you can find simple treasure of the region including fine wine, amazing balsamic vinegar, rich cold-pressed olive oil, trufello and pecorino. There is a post office, several banks, pizzeria, restaurants, gelato, and coffee bars.

The beautiful cities of Florence, Siena, Pisa, Lucca, San Gimignano and Cortona are within the Tuscany region and worthwhile exploring.  (1-2 hours drive through the spectacular countryside).  Discover the architecture, music, history, art and fall in love this summer!

For the wine connoisseur, this region is the epitome of perfect wine country, boasting some of Italy’s most famous appellations: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Brunello di Montalcino, Vernaccia di san Gimignano, and Chianti Classico.  Wine touring here is an immersive experience.

Poppi rises 437 feet high on a hill and is dominated by the Castle of the Count Guidi. Whether he would have thought that a yoga retreat will bring yogis to his castle? However, the cobbled streets, the piazzas, terraces, and architectural styles of Poppi are those of an ancient city. The town, is still in large part protected by walls built in 1261. Tuscany’s fields of sunflowers are in abundance from late June to early August.

We will bring our yoga practice to the magical ground at the base of the Poppi castle overlooking Casentino. The old town of Arezzo is a great place for shopping and sight seeing. It contains the church of San Francesco, where one can admire the history of the True Cross by painter, Piero della Francesca, the Cathedral, the Romanesque church and the birthplace of great scholar and poet Petrarch. Experience all this with our magical yoga retreat!
