Tepoztlán is located in the north of the State of Morelos, in south-central Mexico. Its total size is 242,646 meters squared, with a population of 41,629 inhabitants that include the 14,130 inhabitants in the entire municipality (registry 2010). The word Tepoztlán comes from its etymological roots “tepozt-tli” which means iron or copper and “tlan” which means place or abundance, therefore Tepoztlán means the “place where copper abounds”. This village is a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to Mexico City and its very pleasant climate. It is famous for the remains of the pyramid built on the top of the mountain Tepozteco, which is accessible for visitors. Construction on the pyramid of Tepozteco began around 1150 by the Tepoztecos Xochimilcas, and it is dedicated to Ometochtli-Tepuztécatl, the god of pulque, wind, and plant fertility.

Tepoztlán is considered a mystical place because of its legends and traditions that are still respected. Many people visit because Tepoztlán is full of festivities all year round. Some other destinations that make Tepoztlán famous is the Ex-convent of the Nativity, a beautiful and imposing construction from the sixteenth century that was administered by Dominican friars, restored in 1993 by INAH (National Institute of Anthropology and History), and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994. Visiting the Los Venaditos reserve, the waterfalls and pools of Amatlán (during rainy season), and activities such as rappelling, climbing, and long walks in the hills are all recommended, with a guide, in this area.

Tepoztlán is a magical town most suitable for our celebration of Samavesha. March marks the dry season in Tepoztlán and the beginning of the hot weather, so it is recommended to take precautions for the heat. You are all welcome in lovely Tepoztlán, please enjoy your stay. The Mexican yogis will welcome you with open arms and a big smile.
